Discovering an Old Craft

wheel

Welcome to Home Spun Wool

People have been spinning for a very long time. Archeologists from Yale University have found the earliest piece of knitted fabric in Syria. It dates to 256 A.D and the yarn used was handspun.

Spinning and twisting fiber has been practiced for an even longer period of time. An Egyptian mummy from 2500 BC was found wrapped in a cloth that had 540 warp threads per inch. By comparison, the finest available fabrics (woven commercially) count 350 threads per inch.

Spinning is a relaxing, meditative experience. The regular rhythm of the wheel provides a wonderful backdrop for meditation.  Spinning can also be a very social experience.  My family told me about “spinning circles” where women would come together on a nightly basis to spin and socialize in the early part of the 20th Century in rural Germany.  It is great fun even today, to get together in a group to spin.  One of the best “weekend vacations” is to be had when spinning friends rent a house on the coast over the weekend and everyone brings their wheel!!!!  Sitting back with the wheel and a glass of wine beats TV any day.
